Jarred Mason Barron

Jarred Mason Barron, 95, of Owensboro passed away Friday, November 22, 2013 at his home; just four months after his wife of 72 years, Frankie Mae Griffin Barron passed away. He was born in Owensboro. His parents were the late William and Inez Noel Barron and his late siblings were Mary Noel Barron and James Barron. Mr. Barron was a member and former Trustee of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church and the Open Door Sunday School Class. He was a man of few words who lived his Christian faith through his actions. His life was distinguished by integrity.
Mr. Barron graduated Owensboro High School at 16 and completed a BS and MS in metallurgical engineering at the University of Kentucky. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1940. He served in WWII in the Ordnance Department at the Pentagon. He was sent on Ordnance Intelligence Missions in 1944 both as a Captain to Moscow, USSR, and as a Major to France and Belgium. He retired from the U. S. Army reserve as a Lt. Colonel.
He founded Barron Homes, Inc., which built over 2000 homes before he retired in 1981. He was a director at Citizens State Bank and founding director of Mainsource Financial Group (MSFG). He served as President of Owensboro Rotary and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He served as president of the Owensboro Homebuilders Association and was a member of the Owensboro Metropolitan Planning Commission for 19 years.
Known for his competitive spirit, he played tennis into his 90's.
Mr. Barron is survived by his children, Dickey Sopchak (Mike) of Johnson City, NY; Bill Barron (Jo) of Owensboro, John Barron (Patti) of Prospect, and Sally Bryant (Malcolm) of Owensboro; his grandchildren Barron Sopchak (Kelly), Mary Moninger (Justin), Mason Sopchak (Sarah), William G. "Bo" Barron II (Autumn), Codie Leath (Brad), USMC Capt. Jay Barron (Alicia), Timmy Barron, Mary Angela Barron, Brian Barron, Adam Barron (Kaet), Melissa Gilmour (Scott), Griffin Barron, Sarah Clay Bryant, and Harrison Bryant; 16 great grandchildren; his niece, Anne Sheriff and cousins, Sarah Jane and Tony Minton.
His family wishes to acknowledge the caregivers as they have become like members of his family: Martha Ralph, Connie Howard, Debbie Mayfield, Heather Mayfield, Martha Taylor, Linda Massey, Nancy Jones, Lainey Johnson and Hospice of Western Kentucky.
A family funeral service was held Monday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, followed by interment at Rosehill Cemetery.
A memorial service for Mr. Barron will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church where visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time.
