Janis Marie Greene, 81, of Owensboro, KY, (formerly of Jeffersonville, IN) passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2016 under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky.
Janis was born in Owensboro and completed her undergraduate degree at Kentucky Wesleyan College. She earned a Master's Degree at the University of Michigan. She was privileged to do some of her graduate work and subsequently teach in Guadalajara, Mexico. She taught for many years and even spent some time teaching English in China. Ms. Greene remained active in her retirement years. She volunteered as a tutor to young Spanish speaking students, volunteered for Recording for the Blind, and was a regular volunteer for the Kentucky Center for the Arts in Louisville. She enjoyed adventure, having walked the Great Wall of China and traveled globally. Janis also belonged to a book club and played tennis until four years ago.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Houchen Greene; a sister, Jane Miller; and brothers-in-law, Dr. Thomas Miller and William H. Spurrier.
Ms. Greene is survived by a sister, Meta Spurrier of Owensboro; nieces, Jane Spurrier Nishimori, Leah Day and her husband, Claud, Lissa Koenig and her husband, Jeff; nephews, Jim Spurrier and his wife, Lisa of Calhoun, KY and Jacob "Tracy" Miller; several great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be at 2 PM Saturday, June 11 with visitation from 12 until 2 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory in Owensboro.
