James F. Stuerzenberger, 82, of Owensboro, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. He passed away at his home, surrounded by his family, and has now joined the Lord in eternal life. James was born in Flora, IL to the late Peter A. and Sarah Wilson Stuerzenberger.
He served our country in the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Army 705th AAA Gun Battalion. James managed Kuester's Hardware for over 35 years until his retirement. He was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church and an active member in the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golfing, watching his grandchildren play sports and spending time with his family.
James was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy, Pete, and Bob Stuerzenberger; a sister, Rosalie Benedict; a grandson, Jonathon Phelps and a niece, Ellen Buerskins.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna Thompson Stuerzenberger; his son, Mike (Devona) Stuerzenberger of Owensboro; his daughters, Kathy (Phil) Carr, Mary (Pete) Arnold of Owensboro, Patti (Dan) Searle of Dieterich, IL, and Lisa (Jimmy) Phelps of Whitesville, KY; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and 4 nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 30, 2011 at Precious Blood Catholic Church. Fr. Bruce McCarty will officiate. Burial will be at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. ,with prayers at 6:30 p.m. and on Friday from 8:30 a.m. at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory in Owensboro.
