James G. Payne

James G. "Jim" Payne, 64, of Owensboro, passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born October 28, 1945 in Breckenridge Co., Ky. to the late Henry and Leanora O'Connell Payne. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and was an estimator for Ernie Davis and Sons Mechanical, Inc. He also had worked for a number of years for Modern Welding and was owner and operator of Mechanical Systems, Inc. for a few years. He loved baseball and football and had coached in each for many years especially when his son Shawn was playing. He coached Little League baseball at St. Pius, at Thruston, and at Owensboro Catholic High School. With football, he loved helping his son with his kicking game while at Owensboro Catholic and which eventually helped Shawn when he played for four years at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Jim also loved working in his yard with all the beautiful landscaping having put in a garden and fish pond by their patio and building a nice pergola. He enjoyed entertaining family and friends in the backyard and anyone was always welcome at his home. His life was all about his family and he spent as much time with them as he could. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Barbara Evans, Wanda Kauffeld, and Marilyn Payne, and a brother, Dickie Payne.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Sue Mills Payne, a son, Shawn Payne and wife Amanda of Chicago, IL, two daughters, Kristie Hawkins and husband Al and Shannon Offerman and husband Andy, all of Owensboro, four grandchildren, Richard Miller, Morgan and Brittani Hawkins, and Ryan Offerman, all of Owensboro, two sisters, Fredia Basham and husband Paul of Louisville and Lanie Taul and husband Dan of Owensboro, a sister-in-law, Becky Payne of Owensboro and a brother-in-law, George Kauffeld of Elizabethtown, Ky.

Services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, December 19, at St. Pius X Catholic Church with entombment following in the Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Friday and after 9:00 A.M. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Prayers will be 7:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.
