James Clayton Payne

January 21, 1947 — May 3, 2009

James Clayton Payne, Jr., 62, of Utica passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009 at the Owensboro Medical Health System. Born in Hancock County on January 21, 1947, Mr. Payne was retired from W.R. Grace where he was an extruder operator for 35 years; was a member of SS Joseph and Paul Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister, Hospitality Minister and Sacristan Minister; was a lifetime member of Bassmasters International; and was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, refinishing furniture, was an avid UK fan and, especially, enjoyed spending time with his grandchldren. Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his father, James Payne, Sr. in 1971.

He is survived by his former wife of 23 years, Vickie Payne; daughters, Mary Mischelle Kassinger of Utica and Carol (Tim) Jackson of Owensboro; grandchildren, Ryan Kassinger, Matthew Grimes, Codie Jackson and Hannah Jackson; his mother, Katherine Payne Brand; sisters, Cecelia Kaelin (Jim) Baldwin of Hartford, Sheila (Steve) Byrne and Rebecca (Scott) Hester of Owensboro, and Patricia (Jimmy) Vowels of Pleasant Ridge; brothers, Michael Payne, Sr. of Owensboro, David Payne, Sr. of Hartford, and Tony (Mary Jo) Payne of Utica; numerous nieces and nephews; and his constant companion, Max.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at SS Joseph and Paul Catholic Church follwed by burial in Resurrection Cemetery where military honors will be rendered by VFW Post 696. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday and after 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home where prayers will be said at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
