James "Jim" W. Long, 84, of Owensboro went to be with the Lord on December the 12th 2013 while surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born on June 25th 1929 in Owensboro to the late David and Bessie Long. He was an upholsterer by trade and spent almost 38 years working for the Hon Chair Company, formerly the Murphy Miller Chair Company. Jim was of the Baptist faith and loved his Lord and Savior. He served several roles within the church including Sunday School Superintendant, Youth Director, Vacation Bible School Director, Sunday School Teacher, and Song Leader. He was a godly man who was committed to the care of his children. Jim was an enthusiastic gardener and while he loved all types of flowers he was equally proud of his vegetable production. He was an accomplished photographer and loved taking pictures of his family, his flowers and his cat, Sophie. A sports fan, he closely followed University of Kentucky Basketball as well as boxing. His love of travel included a trip to the Holy Land in 2000. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ida Long.
Mr. Long is survived by his wife of 29 years, Glenda Pool Long; his daughters Freida Gail Miller (Larry), Peggy Jo Oller (Tony), all of Owensboro; his step-daughter Stacey Lynn Palmer (Ron) of Tennessee Ridge, TN ; his step-son Clyde William Thorpe, Jr. (Amanda) of Owensboro; his sister, Jerry Brown, of Owensboro; his grandchildren Nick Oller, Casey Miller, Ryan Miller, Jill Coons; and his step-grandchildren Amber Christian, Heather Baum, and Lauren Baum; his great-grandchildren Haley Coons, Blake Coons, Grant Oller, Kaden Oller, and Max Miller.
The funeral service for Mr. Long, officiated by Brother Eugene Howard along with Rev. Farrell Isenberg, will be at 12:00 noon Monday at Walnut Memorial Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and after 10:00 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Walnut Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund or The Heartford House.
