James K. “Jim” Mattingly, 90, of Owensboro, passed away Thursday, November 2, 2023, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born February 16, 1933, in Owensboro, to the late Joe Mattingly and Lockie Smith Mattingly of West Louisville, KY. He was of strong Catholic faith and attended Precious Blood Catholic Church with Father Suneesh Mathew as his priest.
In the 90 years that Jim lived he was many things to so many people. He was a son, a brother, a United States Navy veteran, a devoted husband of 71 years, a loving dad, a pepaw, an uncle, co-worker, and good friend. He was “salt of the earth”, an honest hardworking man for Roberts Motors for 41 years, reliable and kind. His legacy will live on forever through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Other than family, his great enjoyment was raising and training bird dogs, being President of the Quail Hunters Club, riding his horse on field trials as a judge or winning them with his dogs as a participant. All with lifelong friend, Jack Blandford. He also loved working in his yard and fixing things with duct tape. The grandkids were a great audience for his animated stories and telling of jokes. He was loved dearly and will be missed by all.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Jeff Mattingly; daughter-in-law, Chrisie Burr Mattingly; a son in law, Jerry Jackson; and a brother-in-law, Paul Payne.
Jim is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary Evelyn Thomas Mattingly; daughters, Gayle Mattingly Jackson and Rhonda Mattingly (Richard) Beck; a son, Greg (Angie) Mattingly; grandchildren, James E. Jackson, Russ M. (Katherine) Jackson, Lindsay (Cindy) Mattingly, Shannon (Karl) Clark Phillips, Melissa (Jake) Clark Smith, Michael Mattingly, and Josh (Kim) Mattingly; step grandchildren, Kandice (Bobby) Burr Gray and Ryan Burr; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Carol Ann Payne; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass for Jim will be held at noon Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Precious Blood Catholic Church with Father Suneesh Mathew officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church.
Care by Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
