James L. "Jim" Jeffries, 86, passed away Monday, July 1, 2019, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital after complications from a heart attack he suffered on June 21. He was born in Glen Dean, Kentucky to the late Lee Paul and Flora Clark Jeffries.
Mr. Jeffries was drafted in 1952 and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Four and a half years of his service was in Japan.
Jim was a maintenance planner for Willamette Industries. (now Domtar Paper Co.) in Hawesville. He retired over 20 years ago but continued to work part-time at the Owensboro plant until just recently. During his "retirement" years, he also enjoyed spending many hours helping his friends at Reid's Orchard. He was a long-time member of Thruston United Methodist Church and the American Legion.
Jim especially enjoyed helping others with their special projects, but also could keep himself busy maintaining and improving his eclectic assortment of collections. Hunting was his absolute all-time favorite sport unless it was time for the annual crappie run at Lake Barkley then fishing was his all-time favorite outdoor activity. He made annual trips to South Dakota to pheasant hunt. He enjoyed people and telling his friends and family many stories about folks he had met and, of course, became friends with everyone almost immediately. He had quite the green thumb and grew beautiful flowers and vegetables, which he loved sharing with friends and neighbors.
Mr. Jeffries was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Thelma L. Jeffries in 2012 and a sister, Lois Tabor in 1993.
He is survived by a daughter, Debbie Jeffries Hayden (Bobby) of Utica; son, Mike Jeffries of Owensboro; grandchildren, Sarah Simpson (Larry) of Owensboro, Megan Hayden of Tampa, Florida, Melissa Hatfield of Indianapolis IN, Julie Hill ( Rob) of Ft. Worth TX and Danielle Clary (Gary) of Owensboro; great-grandchildren; Delaney and Ella Hatfield, Hayden Cunnagin, Ava Hill and Peyton Wood; brother-in-law, Mark Tabor of The Villages, Florida; sister-in-law, Margaret Everett of Lakeland, Florida; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Sadie.
