James (Jim) Lawrence Ivey,Sr., 78, of 419 East 22nd Street, Owensboro, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at his son, Tony Iveys, home. He was born May 8, 1926, to the late James Paul and Mary Dobry Ivey in Daviess County. He was preceded in death by his wife Millie Hayden Ivey, who died in November, 1999. They were married August 31, 1947.
Jim retired from the Owensboro Police Department with the rank of Lt. Colonel, Chief of Detectives in 1986, after serving 391/2 years with the Owensboro Police Department. He started with OPD in 1947 as a foot patrolman, and graduated to cars after his wife, Millie, taught him to drive.
He was a Navy Veteran of WW II, was honorably discharged in March, 1946 with the rank of Seaman First Class, and was a long time Kentucky Colonel. He also was a member of the local FOP.
He enjoyed golf, shopping and was passionate about exercising and physical fitness. He loved meeting new people, telling jokes, laughing and staying in touch with old friends. He also enjoyed watching area high school sports as long as his health permitted. Some of his happiest times were spent in the company of his wife, children and grandchildren.
Survivors include, four sons and their wives, Tony and Anita Ivey, and Jim and Linda Ivey, Jr.,of Owensboro, Mike and Linda Ivey, of Utica, Pat and Joellen Ivey of Paducah; three daughters and their husbands, Karen and Jeff Byrge of Sikeston, MO, Donna and Terry Hamilton, and Robin and Greg Leach of Owensboro; sixteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; several cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Services will be 12:00 PM Monday at Blessed Mother Catholic Church, with burial in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday, with prayers being at 7:00 PM Sunday at Glenn Funeral Home. Visitation will be after 9:00 AM Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY, 42301.
