James T. Hines, Jr., 69, passed away Monday, February 20, 2006 at his home. Born March 7, 1936 in Daviess County, Mr. Hines was the son of the late James T Hines, Sr. and Mamie Margaret Armstrong Hines; a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church. Mr. Hines served in the Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He returned to Owensboro to earn his bachelor degree in accounting from Brescia University and later served on the universitys board of trustees. In 1966, he was one of the founders of Premium Allied Tool, a metal stamping company he later expanded to form The Hines Group, Inc. which employs at least 300 people and now includes Premium Allied Tool, Owensboro Manufacturing, MidAmerica Jet and PATx/Electro Partes De Matamoros in Brownsville, TX. The conglomerate does business in 18 foreign countries. Mr. Hines built The Hines Center in Philpot for his employees and the community; became a political force at the local, state, and national levels; and enjoyed many hobbies, including aviation. He started flying gliders in Germany, became a licensed pilot and later founded a company now known as MidAmerica Jet. He was a breeder and racer of thoroughbreds including Lawyer Ron which is a Kentucky Derby contender this year.
He is survived by children, Laine Nunn of Hawesville, Judith Lynne Oliver of Leesburg, FL, Angie Mundy of Jasper, IN, Jim Hines III of Utica, Jennifer Hines of Owensboro, and Joshua Hines of Utica; nine grandchildren; siblings, Barbara Grace of Utica, Carol McGill of Owensboro, Darrell Hines of Beaver Dam and Dr. Kenneth Hines of Lawrenceburg.
Services are at 10 A.M. Friday, February 24, 2006 at St. Anthony Catholic Church at Browns Valley with Rev. Tony Jones and Rev. Mike Clark officiating with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 P.M. Thursday and 8:30 to 9:30 A.M. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home where prayers will be said at 6:30 P.M. Thursday evening.
