James Jimmy William Harlan, Sgt., United States Army, died Friday, May 14, 2004 from wounds suffered in an attack on his convoy near Camp Anaconda, Iraq. Born in Daviess County on December 4, 1959, Sgt. Harlan was a reservist deployed with the 660th Transportation Unit and had been in Iraq since February. Sgt. Harlan was a professional truck driver, welder, and heavy equipment operator. Prior to his deployment he worked the Owensboro City Street Department. Sgt. Harlan enjoyed fishing, baseball, football, basketball, NASCAR, hunting, softball, watching western movies. He served as a Little League coach for 3 years. He was very proud to serve his country. He was preceded in death by his father, William Arthur Harlan in 1988 and a step-brother, Michael Earl Calloway.
Surviving are five children, James B. Harlan of Bowling Green, David S. Harlan of St. Cloud, Fl, and Jacob Alexander Roberts ,Tara Strelsky and Amanda Prout all of Owensboro; his mother, Doris Marie Gray of Owensboro; his fiance, Carol Gray of Owensboro; 2 grandchildren, Jaidyn Anais Main and Abigail Lynn Rose Prout of Owensboro; a step-son, Bobby Gray of Owensboro, s step-daughter, Brittany Gray of Owensboro; two brothers, Kenny Likens and DeWayne Likens of Owensboro; a sister, Doris Taylor of Owensboro; two step-brothers, Randall Wingfield and Steve Wingfield; and seven nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 10 A.M. Monday, May 24, 2004 at Glenn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1-6 P.M. on Sunday and after 8:30 A.M. on Monday.
