James Courtney, 87, of Owensboro, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the Heartford House while under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. James was born April 19, 1939, in Scott County, KY, to the late Willard and Katherine Woolums Courtney.
James was a dedicated employee who retired from Chevron after many years of service. He was an avid fisherman who found great joy on the water and especially loved spending time shrimping in Florida. James took pride in caring for his yard and flowers, enjoyed watching the birds that visited his home, and treasured the years he spent living in Florida.
Above all, he loved his family. Whether he was fishing, tending to his flowers, watching birds from the yard, or gathering everyone together for a game night, he cherished the simple moments in life. His strong work ethic, love of the outdoors, and devotion to his family will be remembered by all who knew him.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Kathleen Courtney; daughters, Kathy Courtney and Vickey Payne; a sister, Judy Schadler; and other loved ones who welcomed him home.
James will be lovingly missed by his children, Margie Autry (Jeff) , Jim Courtney (Eileen), and Mike Courtney; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Donald, Bruce, and Ricky Courtney; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.
There will be a memorial gathering for family and friends of James from 2 until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday June 27, 2026, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Following the visitation there will be a time of gathering for light food and refreshments in the Heritage Room upstairs at the funeral home until 5 p.m.
Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort in the memories he leaves behind and the love he shared throughout his life. His legacy lives on through his family and all those whose lives he touched.
The family takes comfort in knowing that James is reunited with Kathleen, Kathy, Vickey, and the loved ones who went before him.
