James E. Coomes, 93, of Owensboro, passed away on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born February 19, 1925 in Daviess Co. to the late Joseph Watt and Hattie Hodskins Coomes. James was a member of Immaculate Catholic Church and retired from Texas Gas as an accountant. He received his degree in accounting from Brescia College. He was a U. S. Marine Corp veteran of World War II in which he fought in the South Pacific and was on several islands including Iwo Jima where he was wounded and eventually received the Purple Heart. He was in the First Marine Paratrooper Batallion and Marines 5th Division. James was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, had been a Boy Scout leader, and coached youth baseball.
James was also preceded in death by an infant son, Dennis Gregory Coomes on March 18, 1956, four sisters, Ann Byrne, Elizabeth Allen, Edwina Coomes, and Pauline Sublett, and a brother, Felix Coomes.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Rosemary Coomes, a daughter, Linda Clatterbuck and husband Tony of Owensboro, three sons, Don Coomes and Tim Coomes, both of Owensboro, and Philip Coomes and wife Connie of Destin, Florida, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a sister, Dolly Baughn of Evansville, and four brothers, Joe Coomes of Owensboro, Frank Coomes of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Henry Coomes of Los Angeles, California, and Anthony Coomes of Atlanta, Georgia.
Services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, April 9, at Immaculate Catholic Church with burial following in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
