James Gerald Childs, 67, passed away April 5th, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents Clayton G. and Anne Maxson Childs.
Born in Cuba, New York, he moved with his family to Owensboro in 1953 and lived here most of his life. He graduated from Daviess County High School in 1964 and attended the University of Kentucky and Kentucky Wesleyan College. He moved to California and worked for Matson Shipping Lines until his retirement and return to Kentucky following an automobile accident.
Soft spoken, he nonetheless never wavered in his liberal Democratic views in a household of dedicated conservatives. He was a gifted writer, a talented musician and a gentle man. Although not an avid sports fan, he could occasionally be heard to softly mutter "Go Cats".
He is survived by his sister, Linda Overby (Joe), his nephews Drew Overby (Amy), Jordan Overby (Jen), his nieces Lindsey Overby and Maxson Overby (John), a great nephew (Reise), two great nieces (Coby, Nina) and many others from his New York family.
He was taken from us too soon, and it is with great sadness that we say good-bye. He will be missed.
Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. Private burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Wendell Foster's Campus or the Owensboro Humane Society. Messages of condolence may be placed at www.glennfuneralhome.com.
