James Maxwell “Max” Chancellor, 96, of Owensboro, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Morning Pointe Senior Living of Owensboro. He was born the sixth of seven children, in Hartford, KY, to the late Alva Carson Chancellor and Alma Moore Chancellor.
Max graduated from Centertown High School, and he served his country in the United States Army in Europe. He was retired from G.E. and MPD. Max and his wife, Ann, also oversaw estate sales for many years.
Max was an active member of Hall Street Baptist Church for more than sixty years, and served as a deacon for 52 years there, also serving as the Brotherhood Director, Sunday School Director, TU Director, choir member, on the rest home ministry, moderator, trustee, and other committees.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ann P. Pendley Chancellor; a daughter, Diane Pennington; brothers, Denver, Wendell, Ray, Aubrey, and Bob Chancellor; and a sister, Meta Clarice.
Max is survived by his daughter, Trisha Todd (Obbie) of Owensboro; a son, James Kevin Chancellor of Owensboro; a son-in-law, Charlie Pennington; grandchildren, Laurel Pennington Lippay (Norm), Leslie Pennington, James Pennington (Becca), Obbie Tyler Todd (Kelly) and Grant Taylor Todd (Kacey); great-grandchildren, Roman Todd, Ruby Todd, Calvin Todd, Caroline Todd, Clark Todd, Timothy Pennington, and Daniel Pennington; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Max will be held at 12 pm Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Obbie Tyler Todd officiating. Entombment to follow in the Chapel of Peace at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 am until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
