Jake Valdez, 85, of Owensboro, Kentucky, and originally from Chama, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2024. Born on August 26, 1938, Jake was one of six children born to Antonio and Emma Romero Valdez. He graduated from Brescia College with a degree in Education, a Master’s Degree and his Rank 1 and went on to become a beloved Spanish teacher at Burns Middle school, including his Alma mater and Kentucky Wesleyan College.

Jake was not only dedicated to his profession but also deeply involved in his community, contributing his time and efforts to organizations like Civitan and others. His commitment to education and community left an indelible mark on the lives of countless students and colleagues, who adored him for his warmth, compassion, and genuine care.

In addition to his professional achievements, Jake shared a beautiful life with his wife, becoming the first couple married at Precious Blood Catholic Church. Together, they cultivated a passion for travel, embarking on adventures across every state in their motorhome and exploring Europe.

Jake's life was rich with experiences, including his service in the 101st Airborne as a paratrooper and Green Beret. Known for his big personality, easy-going nature, and ability to connect with anyone, Jake never met a stranger. He was a loving and kind soul, adored by many for his charm, politeness, and unwavering friendliness.

An avid University of Kentucky basketball fan, Jake enjoyed serenading friends and family with Spanish songs, showcasing his love for music and culture. As a father and friend, he was simply remarkable, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of love and kindness that will forever be remembered and celebrated.

Jake Valdez will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. 

 In addition to his parents, Jake also was preceded in death by his brother, Louie Valdez, and his sister, Louella Fernandez. 

 Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Mary Hettinger Valdez; son, Greg Valdez and wife Rosalyn of Ohio; daughter, Pamela Wascher and husband Dr. Tom of Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Lex, Louis, Lucrecia (Lucy), and Lee (Leo) Valdez; brothers, Horace Valdez, Rudy Valdez (Lugi), and Milton Valdez all of Santa Fe, NM; brother-in-law, Doug Hettinger (Gail); sister-in-law, Jessie Hettinger; numerous nieces and nephews.

 Visitation will be Thursday, May 9 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory followed by a 3:00 pm Graveside ceremony at Owensboro Memorial Gardens where Jake will be entombed.
