Jack L. Ross, 80, of Owensboro died Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the Owensboro Medical Health System. He graduated from Owensboro High School in 1946 and enlisted in the US Navy. Following his service, he graduated from the Bowling Green Business University; worked for the US Postal Service; and served 35 years as the State Executive Secretary for the Travelers Protective Association (TPA). Upon his retirement, he served on the state and national board's of directors for the TPA.
Mr. Ross served on the Owensboro Municipal Utilities board of directors and six terms as Owensboro City Commissioner, including two terms as Mayor Pro-Tem. He also served on various boards and committees with other non-profit organizations in Owensboro. He enjoyed sports and was an accomplished racquetball player winning the city championship 2 consecutive years. He enjoyed coffee clubs, weekly card games, and spending time with family and friends. He loved to watch UK basketball with his dog "Daisy".
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Phyllis in 2000 and a son-in-law, Phillip D. Hardesty in 2003. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Edwin, John Lyman, and Joe Bill Ross, and his sisters, Jean Ross Barnard and Margaret Ross Fuchs.
Mr. Ross is survived by his loving companion of 6 years, Shirlene Thompson; a son, David L. Ross, a daughter, Pamela Ross Hardesty, and a step-son, Daniel K. Collins all of Owensboro; three grandchildren, Stephen Hardesty (Stepanie Bumm) of Owensboro, and Sarah E. Hardesty and Mary E. Hardesty of Bowling Green.
Services are 12 Noon, Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Glenn Funeral Home followed by burial in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Monday and after 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
