Jack Benjamin Hatfield, age 80, passed away on December 16, 2025, at the Heartford House. He most recently resided at the Carmel Home in Owensboro, Kentucky.
Born on October 16, 1945, in Owensboro, Kentucky, Jack was the son of Flora Kathryn Jarnigan Hatfield and James Clifton “Jack” Hatfield. He was a graduate of Owensboro High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Jack was a co-owner of Wetzel’s Supermarkets, where his work ethic and community ties were well known. Above all, he loved his family and was beyond proud of his grandchildren, cherishing time spent with them. He was also known for his love of entertaining and hospitality, always enjoying a full house, good conversation, and making others feel welcome. He was generous with his time, resources, and money, quietly helping others whenever he could.
Jack will be remembered most for his lifelong passion for horse racing. He rarely missed Derby Week at Churchill Downs—where, it seemed, everyone knew his name—and enjoyed ending a day at Ellis Park with a T-bone steak at Como’s in Evansville.
He is survived by his daughters, Julie Warren (Matt) and Carrie Kimbrell (Marcus); his grandchildren, Elizabeth Warren, Will Warren, Julia Brooks (Carson Brooks), and Blake Kimbrell; and his nephews, Mike Gregson, Terry Gregson, and Gary Gregson.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy Hatfield, and his sister, Patricia Gregson.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at the Carmel Home—too many to name, but especially Toshia and Mike, who loved Jack like family. Special appreciation is also given to the compassionate caregivers at the Heartford House for the great care shown during his final days. A special thank you to Dr. Jinah Sayed, who affectionately called Jack “Uncle Jack,” for being there for him as both physician and friend. The family also extends sincere gratitude to Fr. Ray Clark for his comforting words and song.
The Memorial service for Jack will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday December 22, 2025, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Father Ray Clark officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorial contributions may be made to the Carmel Home, 2501 Old Hartford Road, or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Kentucky 3419 Wathen’s Crossing Owensboro, KY 42301.
Jack’s love of family, friendship, and the thrill of the track will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
