Jack H. Cole

October 28, 1931 — January 23, 2011

Dr. Jack Haughton Cole, 79, of Ensor, found an end to his suffering as he left his earthly home on January 23, 2011 at Owensboro Medical Health System. He went to join his wife of 60 years, Fern Mallow Cole, who had just gone ahead to wait for him in their place in Heaven in December. He was born to the late Lelia Lang Cole and Rudy Cole in Leavenworth, Indiana, on October 28, 1931. He was preceded in death by his brothers Berney, John, James, Sheldon, Jesse, Charles and Bayward and his sister, Hazel Edgerton.

He grew up a country boy on the Ohio River in southern Indiana. There he met and married the love of his life, Fern Mallow, in 1950 and they truly fulfilled their vows, for better or worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death did they part.

Jack was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Afterward he entered Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, he accepted a position as veterinarian with the U. S. Department of Agriculture in disease eradication where he worked until he retired in 1996.

Jack felt his greatest achievement and happiness in life were in spending time with his family. He was most proud of his daughter and son-in-law, and his two "grandbuddies." His slow and deliberate demeanor influenced all their lives, and he was glad to have retired at a time when he was able to help raise both grandsons.

He was a member of Owensboro Christian Church. He enjoyed farming, being outdoors, hunting, watching the financial markets, and arguing politics. His legacy is further represented by the 150 year-old Leavenworth-Cole-Lang hay press he donated to the state of Indiana which is a major attraction of the O'Bannon Woods State Park.

Left behind are his daughter Angie Clark and husband Kenny of Thruston; grandsons Zachary Clark of Louisville and Aaron Clark of Thruston; his sister-in-law, Edie Sturgill and her husband Earl of Beechwood, Indiana and his niece and nephew, Jack and Ruth Edgerton of Newburgh, Indiana

Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Rick Grover officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be private. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the donor's favorite charity.
