Ione Abshier Craig, 92, of Owensboro (formerly of Alexandria, IN) passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at her home. Born May 30, 1917 in Spencer County, IN, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Ella (Ferguson) Abshier; was a graduate of Ball State Teacher's College; taught kindergarten and first grade in the Alexandria Community Schools for 35 years, retiring in 1973; and was a former member of the Alexandria First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Craig was a member of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church where she taught adult sunday school. She was the founder of the "Just Write" adult writing class, taught English as a second language, and recorded many books including the Bible for the Kentucky School of the Blind. She was preceded in death by her husband, Armyn Craig on August 8, 1985, two brothers George and Clinton Abshier and a sister Wildon Emma Rudisill.
Mrs. Craig is survived by a sister, Maxine Heid of Greenwood, IN, a brother in law and a sister in law, 13 nieces and nephews, and many other loving friends and family.
Mrs. Craig bequeathed her body to the Indiana University Medical School.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. November 1st, 2009 at Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church in Owensboro. The Service will be officiated by Dr Timo Karvonen
A committal service will be held in Alexandria , IN at a later date.
