Hugh Bedford Wilhite Sr., 88 of Highway 554, Owensboro, died February 4, 2011 at his home. He was born in Daviess County on August 2, 1922 to Noel and Frances Elizabeth (Rowan) Wilhite, seventh of twelve children on the farm his grandfather bought in September 28, 1874. Hugh was a farmer and lived there all his life. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church that was founded on the farm by his grandfather, Charlie Madison Wilhite in 1879.
On January 8, 1943, Hugh entered the Army in WWII until it ended. He left the Army on November 28 , 1945. He was a truck driver and mechanic and was in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central European Campaigns, and had the decorations and citations of Good Conduct Medal, WWII, Victory Medal, European, African, and Middle Eastern Theatres with 4 Bronze Stars.
In 1950, he united in marriage with Winona Acton and to this union, six children were born. Winona preceded him in death in 2006, as well as two grandchildren, Troy Wilhite and Samantha Garner Jones.
Surviving are his children, Evelyn (Micheal) Chilton, Wanda (Dextor) Gregory, both of Owensboro, Eleanor Parker of Lawrenceberg, KY., Donnie Faye Wilhite of Frankfort, KY, and and E.V. (Mark) Garner and Hugh (Linda) Wilhite Jr. of Washington D.C., 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, a brother, Rack H. Wilhite of Owensboro, sisters-in-law, Ursaline S. Wilhite, Catherne B. Acton, Catherine J. Acton, Thelma Acton, Lena Tinsley, and brothers -in-law, Wesley and Golden Acton.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with visitation from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. and burial will follow in Pleasant Point Cemetery, Pleasant Ridge.
