Hugh “Glover” Myles, 85, of Owensboro, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, while under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. He was born November 18, 1940, in Daviess County to the late Herman and Clara Young Myles.
Glover was a carpenter with the Carpenters Local in Owensboro for 21 years. In 1980, he began working with Hartz Construction, where he spent the next 29 years and retired in 2009 as a superintendent. During his career, he played a role in the construction of many significant buildings and projects throughout the Owensboro region.
Outside of his work, Glover was an exceptionally skilled woodworker with true artisan craftsmanship. No detail was too small. Cabinetmaking was one of his many talents, and in all of his work, craftsmanship and quality mattered deeply. Tools were more than tools in his hands. They were an extension of himself. Carpentry came naturally to him, and while others might need to write down complex calculations, Glover could simply work them out in his head with a quiet confidence that came from years of experience. His workshop was filled with tools he loved and used often.
After retirement, that workshop became his daily place of work. Crafting pieces for friends and family became his new 9 to 5, though he rarely charged for anything. He simply enjoyed making things for the people he loved.
Glover was active at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where he was involved in the Men’s Club and helped with bingo. During parish picnics, his carpentry skills often placed him in charge of cutting the barbecue. He was also an avid NASCAR fan and a Kentucky basketball fan, especially when they were winning. Over the past year, Glover enjoyed connecting with new friends at his twice a week YMCA boxing class, Rock Steady, as therapy for Parkinson’s Disease.
Family was the center of Glover’s life. He was deeply involved in his children’s lives, always ready to help with whatever they needed and present for the many activities and events that filled their days. He also loved cooking for his family, and a roast on the table every Sunday was a tradition they all looked forward to.
That same love and devotion extended to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved playing with them in the yard, bringing them into his workshop, and setting up tools so they could learn to build alongside him. When they were not together, he made sure to call and check in to see how they were doing.
Glover and his wife, Phyllis, cherished the time they spent with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They also treasured the quieter moments they shared together while traveling. His love for Phyllis was often shown through small acts of kindness and steady devotion.
Glover was a friend to all who knew him. Deeply rooted in his family, humble in spirit, and kind in his actions, he lived a life defined by steady devotion to the people around him. To those who knew and loved him, he was truly a quiet giant.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Megan Miller; sisters, Joyce Settles and Alyce Goetz; and a stepdaughter, Holly Renee Mattingly.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Phyllis Myles; children, Larry Myles (Terri), Kevin Myles, Mischelle Miller (Tim), Steven Myles, Matthew Vanover (Jessica) and Julie Bridgmon (Justin); grandchildren, Korey Myles (Veronica), Mark Myles, Cameron Myles (Danielle), Myles Miller (Erica), Morgan Akers (Jacob), Hunter Myles (Sarah), Garrett Myles, Logan Myles, Heather Bridgmon, Nathaniel Dent, Hunter Bridgmon (Lexie), Ashley Schneider (Alex), Logan Frederick (Allie), Charles Vanover.; sister, Gayle Moser; and 18 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service for Glover Myles will be at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Entombment will take place in Christ Chapel at Owensboro Memorial Gardens at 9:00 am on Monday.
