Hugh Louis Johnson

Hugh Louis Johnson, 82, of Owensboro, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in his home surrounded by family. He was born in Owensboro on May 14, 1944, to the late Sylvester and Dorthy Fullenwider Johnson. Hugh met Mary Jo Mattingly when they were just 17 years old, and they were married on July 24, 1965.

Hugh became a carpenter/millwright, working for the Carpenter’s Local 1080 Union before retiring and working for Alcoa for another 16 years. Hugh served in the Army National Guard for 6 years. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, working with his hands, and spending time with his family. Hugh was a member of St. Pius the Tenth Catholic Church.

Along with his parents, Hugh was preceded in death by his sister Frances Johnson and brother Roy Johnson.

Hugh is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Jo; sons, Jeff Johnson (Jan), David Johnson (Holly), Daniel Johnson, and Hugh Johnson, Jr. (Crystal); daughter, Susan (Jason) Johnson; along with 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren one on the way.

The funeral Mass will be at 12:00 pm, Saturday, August 29th at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Visitation at St. Pius X Catholic Church will be Saturday from 10:00 am until 12:00 PM. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
