Hershel E. Johnson, 82, of Owensboro, passed away on Sunday March 28, 2010 at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on February 9, 1928 in Daviess Co., Ky. to the late Ike and Lillie Alvey Johnson. He retired in 1990 from the Hon Co. after 44 years as an engineer in designing. He was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he was an ordained elder. He loved his church very much and enjoyed doing things for them. He was in the National Guard from 1947 until 1953 and was a Ky. Colonel. Hershel and his wife were members of the Friendship Camping Club and they showed quarter horses together for a long time. He enjoyed restoring old cars and his favorite was a 1960 2 door Vespa which he still had. He loved his family more than anything and enjoyed all the gatherings they would have at there home. He was also a U.K. basketball fan and loved his dog Sadie Jane very much. He was also preceded in death by four brothers and sisters, Hubert and Thurman Johnson, Mary Couture and Edith Sestak.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Barbara Baker Johnson, three daughters, Linda Westerfield and husband Riley of Owensboro, Debbie Dinning of Owensboro, and Betty Underhill and husband David of Philpot, six grandchildren, Kathy Young and husband Rob of Owensboro, Holly Cavender and husband Earl of Philpot, Amy Jacob and husband Michael of Owensboro, James Lambert and wife Alicia of Philpot, Angel Harrington and husband Nathan of Maceo, and Chad Allen Underhill of Philpot, nine great grandchildren and one on the way, one great great grandchild, and two sisters, Eva Decker of Louisville and Maxine Head of Owensboro.
Services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 31, at Cumberland Presbyterian Church with entombment following in Owensboro Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and after 1:00 P.M. Wednesday at the church.
