Herbert Gene "Wormie" Wermling Sr.

Herbert Gene “Wormie” Wermling Sr., 80, of Owensboro, passed away on Friday September 18, 2026, at his home while under the care of Hospice of western Kentucky. He was born January 17, 1946, in Daviess County, to the late Madoline Lampkin Wermling Frost. Gene started working as a painter for JR Shown here in Owensboro at the young age of 14, he then worked as a welder for Schwab, and at Kentucky Concrete Pipe for 20 years before retiring, and worked at Falloway Auto Parts for 20 years. Gene and his wife Alice were members of First Baptist Church since 1965.

Gene also enjoyed going fishing, hunting, and was a jack of all trades, if it was broken, guaranteed he would figure out how to fix it.

Along with his mother, he was also preceded in death by his father, Glenn Jack Frost; and his only brother, Jimmy Wermling.

Gene is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice McCarthy Wermling; a son, Herbie (Kimberly) Wermling Jr.; daughters, Kaye Dennison and Anna (Greg) Way; grandchildren, Brittany, Randi, Jordan, Jacklyn, Joshua, and Kaitlyn; and a great grandchildren, Caleb, Asher, Keelie, Kaliah, Macie Grace, and Madalyn.

A funeral service for Gene will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday September 24, 2026, with Pastor Wesley Dunn officiating. Burial to follow in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
