Herbert J. Bertke, Jr., 83, of Owensboro, died Thursday, April 20, 2017, at the University of Louisville Hospital. He was born in Daviess County to the late Herbert Joseph Bertke, Sr. and Grace Carlisle Bertke. Mr. Bertke graduated from St. Francis Academy, attended Brescia College, and graduated from Marquette University. He worked as an electrical engineer for General Electric before joining Home Realty as a licensed real-estate agent and eventually working as a real-estate appraiser. Mr. Bertke was a founding member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church where he was active on the Parrish Council, the School Board and in the Serra Club He also enjoyed his mornings at Hardees with his friends, working in his yard and spending time with his family.
He was also preceded in death by his siblings; Loretta Richards and Eddy Bertke.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Bernice Riney Bertke; children, Karen Thomas (Ron) of Owensboro, Bruce Bertke (Paula) of Huntsville, AL, Kevin Bertke (Stacey) of Owensboro and Todd Bertke (Mia) of Owensboro; grandchildren, Craig Thomas (Sarah), Chad Thomas (Laura), Ashley Knepper (Aaron), Brad Bertke (fiancé Meredith) and Tyler Bertke; great-grandchildren, Mary Grace, William, Lucy, Abbie Jane, and Allie.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, with prayers at 7 p.m., and after 9 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
