Helen VanWinkle Onstott, 85, of Owensboro, died December 20, 2013 in Owensboro. She was born the 4th of 13 children on November 12, 1928 in Daviess County to the late Dewey Sr. and Tillie Frances Smith VanWinkle. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Raymond Onstott. She also was preceded in death by a grandson, Benjamin Rose, 6 brothers and 2 sisters. Helen graduated from Owensboro High and became a registered nurse. She not only used her nursing skills professionally, but also to care for family and friends. She was a member of St John United Methodist Church and was once very active in church organizations. Helen enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting and crocheting.
Surviving are her children, Sally (Tom) Silliman and Amy (Craig) McKay; grandchildren, Laura (Dave) Schefer, Rachel (Mike) Barr, Heather (Kyle) Cowherd and Graham (Miranda) McKay; and great grandchildren, Jessica and Kyle Dennison, Cayden Madden and Jacob Barr. Brothers, Bill (Marilyn) and Phillip (Martha) VanWinkle and sisters, Betty Miller and Patty (Bill) Fitzgerald.
Services will be at 2 PM Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Glenn Funeral Home & Crematory with Reverend Peggy Smith presiding. Entombment will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 PM on Saturday and after noon on Sunday.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St John UMC. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
