Helen Doris Wathen McCarty, 80, passed peacefully at her home on March 11, 2017, surrounded by loved ones after a lengthy illness.
Helen was born on April 28, 1936 in Daviess County, KY to the late Joseph Herman and Mary Ethel Payne Wathen.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Thomas Gerald McCarty, Sr., infant children Theresa Marie and Thomas Gerald, and great grandson Jude.
Helen graduated from Owensboro Catholic High School. She was manager of Stop-N-Go convenient stores and worked within the Owensboro Catholic School System which she left to take care of her aging father until his death.
She was an active member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church for over 50 years. She served her church family as a member of the parish council, finance and picnic committees, lector, Eucharistic minister, and engaged couple sponsor. She and her husband Gerald were recipients of the 2001 Outstanding Senior Citizen Sophia Award. She was a strong advocate for Marriage Encounter, Birthright, and Right to Life. Helen loved playing cards with her family and friends; she enjoyed taking trips and exploring new places.
She is survived by her seven children Deacon Jim (Emily) McCarty of Louisville, KY and Joann McCarty, Angela "Angie" McCarty, Tom (Angie) McCarty, Helen Marie (Ken) Bennett, Susan (Mick) McRoy, Lisa (Don) Leibee, all of Owensboro. She was fondly called Memaw by 12 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 11 step-great grandchildren, 1 great, great granddaughter. Her sisters-in-law, many loving nieces and nephews, extended family and friends are left to cherish her memory. She took great delight in her beloved dog, Snoopy.

A funeral Mass will be held 10am Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Blessed Mother Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 until 8 pm with prayers at 6:00 on Tuesday March14, 2017 and after 8:30 am on Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory
