Helen M. Christ

September 10, 1919 — November 26, 2016

Helen M. Christ, 97, of Owensboro went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 26, 2016. Helen was the third child of Walter and Myrtle Cross. She was born near Scranton, PA and was one of eleven children. She met her husband, Bob "Christy" Christ at a meeting of the Fishers Club, an evangelistic organization for teens and young adults. They married in 1940 in Scranton, PA and moved immediately to Cleveland, Ohio where Bob had a job. Their first child was born in Cleveland. Christy was drafted for WWII and Helen and young Howard returned to Scranton where Helen had family. Their second child was born before the war ended.

Following the war Bob and Helen's family grew and they moved to the small town of Clarks Summit, PA where they began raising their six children. Helen was a "stay-at-home-Mom" who managed her home with loving care. She was an excellent cook and homemaker, a seamstress, and her hands were never idle. She and Christy took their responsibility of teaching their children the ways of the Lord very seriously. As a result, church attendance was a regular part of their life. She had a gift of teaching children and taught Child Evangelism classes as well as Sunday School. They moved to Owensboro, KY in 1962, with General Electric. After this move, Helen had her first job outside of the home working for W.T. Grants as a drapery consultant. Helen was active in the women's ministry of her church. She also served on the Board of the Mary Kendall Home, at one time serving as President of the Board. Her life was devoted to faithfully serving Jesus Christ because of the amazing grace given to her in His sacrifice on the cross. Even in her last years of life she could still recite Scripture and loved to sing hymns. Helen and Bob belonged to First Baptist Church in the last years of their lives.

She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-nine years, Robert H. Christ, in 2010.

Helen is survived by her six children, Howard (Earlene) Christ of Mt. Vernon, Il, Sharon (Art) Scott of Myrtle Beach, SC, Ginny (John) Irwin of Pittsburgh, PA, Dick (Penny) Christ of Owensboro, Henry (Kay) Christ of Fordsville, KY, and Becky (Paul) Morton of Chickamauga, Ga. She is survived also by 13 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren, both of her sisters and 2 of her brothers.

The family would like to thank Lee Roberts of First Baptist for his faithful, monthly visits that she enjoyed. They also appreciate the kindness and care Mom and her family received from Hospice of Western Kentucky. The last year of her life was more peaceful because of the care given by all of the staff who attended her.

Helen will be sorely missed by her family. They are thankful for the love and the wisdom she imparted to them, her wonderful sense of humor and her gentle and kind spirit. They are consoled by knowing she is with her Savior.

The funeral service will be 12 PM, Saturday, December 3 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with visitation after 9:00 AM. Entombment will be at Owensboro Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
