Hazel Dawn Whitaker Young, 89, of Panther, was surrounded by loving family as she went to be with the Lord on March 15th, 2013. She was born on November 25th, 1923 to the late Jay and Margaret Whitaker. Hazel was a dedicated and loving wife and mother. She was a member of Brushy Fork Baptist Church where she was secretary for over 30 years and was a Sunday school teacher for 64 Years. When she wasn't at the church she loved watching The Kentucky Wildcats play basketball. Hazel started off working at The Thrifty Dress Shop in downtown Owensboro during World War II. Following the war she was employed by Kenrad, and then at Tots & Toys, which her sister owned and was located downtown as well.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Alwyn J. Young, brother; J.T. Whitaker, and sisters Sally Byrd and Billie Rhoades.
Survivors include her son, Steven (Joni) Young, of Panther; daughter Peggy (Doug) Literski of Lake in the Hills, IL; granddaughters Shelli Moring, Paula Ramsey, and Heather Young; great grandchildren Logan Moring and Joshua Ramsey; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Tuesday, March 19th, at 12:00 noon at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Brother Jason Mayfield will officiate. Visitation will be Monday, March 18th from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm and from 10:00 am until time of service on Tuesday.
Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to Hospice of Western KY or the Brushy Fork Baptist Church Building Fund.
