Harold N. Taylor, 61, of 9325 Highway 231, Masonville, succumbed to injuries suffered in a March 4, 2003 motorcycle accident in Daytona Beach, Fl. today Sunday, May 1, 2005 at Wellington Parc. He was born in Jefferson Co., Ky. to the late Harold E. & Margaret Dulin Taylor. He attended Masonville United Methodist Church.
Harold had served for 42 years as a member of the Masonville Volunteer Fire Department, where he reached the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. He began his law enforcement career in 1969, eventually serving one term as Daviess Co. Sheriff and five terms as Jailer. Throughout his law enforcement career, he had many accomplishments. He served as the president of both the Kentucky Sheriffs Association and the Kentucky Jailers Association. He was the only jailor in the United States to consistently operate a detention center without local tax dollars. Jail surplus funds accumulated throughout his terms were used to construct and pay for the majority of the new detention center facilities. One of his proudest moments as Jailer was the fiscal court dedication of the first building on the complex as the Harold N. Taylor Restricted Custody Facility. He was instrumental in drafting many pieces of legislation that were subsequently passed into law. He was a very active participant with the Kentucky Sheriffs Boys and Girls Ranch in Gilbertsville, Ky.
Surviving is his wife of 3 years, Kathy Freels Taylor, a daughter, Deborah Taylor Duncan (Barry) of Masonville, a son, Duane Taylor of Masonville, two sisters, Jean Owen (Randy) and Bettye Aull, all of Owensboro, seven grandchildren, Blake, Jordyn, Madison, Gage, Hannah, Cameron, and Ashley.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, May 3, at the Glenn Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00-8:00 P.M. Monday and after 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kentucky Wesleyan College and designated for the Harold N. Taylor Endowed Scholarship Fund, 3000 Frederica St., Owensboro, Ky. 42301.
