Harold Shaver, 80, of Owensboro, died Monday, October 20, 2014 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Heaven surely smiled as one of their own was welcomed home. Harold was a true angel on earth. He was born in Ohio County to the late Odis and Clara Thomas Shaver. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, R.C. Shaver and Betty Shaver.
Harold's smile brightened the days of friends and family alike; he never met a stranger. What couldn't be accomplished with a grin was done with a kind word, warm hug or a wiggle of the ear. It is rare to find a man whose true nature exemplified such goodness and joy but Harold was one of a kind.
After serving in the United States Army and the Army Reserve, Harold worked as the Mailroom Supervisor at the Messenger- Inquirer for 48 years. He enjoyed every moment of his time there. Harold was a member of Hall Street Baptist Church where he had served as an usher and on the finance committee. His later years were spent with his wife Judy and taking on the unofficial role of Walmart greeter.
Harold enjoyed woodworking, NASCAR races and UK basketball but nothing brightened his days like time spent with his family. A proud father, beloved husband and cherished Pappaw; he guided his family with a gentle strength that is already missed. Harold passed away as he lived his life- with grace, laughter and surrounded by family.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Judy Brown Shaver; sons, Michael Shaver (Kathy) of Owensboro and David Shaver (Derek Vowels) of Louisville; granddaughter, Amy Ragsdale (Jordan) ; great-granddaughter, Emma Cole Ragsdale, all of Murfreesboro, TN; a sister, Dorothy Gray of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. on Thursday in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday and after 9 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
