Harold L. "Sonny" Hall, 78, of Owensboro, passed away October 18, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family. Sonny was born in Louisville on October 7, 1945, to the late Harold L. and Ruby Collins Hall. In 1963, Owensboro saw the completion of Gabe's Tower, the opening of Pizzaroma, and Sonny Hall's arrival at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Sonny often joked that he was the last one standing of the three. During his time at Kentucky Wesleyan, he crossed paths with Christy Hocker. The two quickly clicked, leading to their marriage in 1965. They cherished 58 years of marital bliss, although the degree of "heavenliness" varied based on which one you asked and at what moment. Sonny was deeply committed to his two sons, often seen at their games and occasionally taking the role of an umpire. This dedication also extended to his grandchildren, with whom he treasured every moment he could share. Those treasured moments often took place on Hilton Head Island, where the family enjoyed their time. While there, Sonny was passionate about fishing, discussing fishing tales, and occasionally making a catch or two. Sonny was blessed with a remarkable group of friends who lovingly called him "Gump". Some of these friends were part of his regular lunchtime gathering, which originated at The Campbell Club. It was a spirited group where lively conversations flowed, ears seldom listened, and facts never hindered a captivating tale. Sonny held his real estate and broker's licenses in Kentucky and South Carolina, was a devoted Settle Memorial United Methodist Church member, and passionately supported Kentucky Wesleyan Athletics.
Sonny was deeply engaged in the community, taking on significant roles in a myriad of organizations. He co-founded Girls, Inc., which was originally named the Florence Henderson Girls Club. Additionally, he was the Executive Committee Treasurer for the Owensboro-Daviess County Chamber of Commerce. His commitment to faith led him to the Finance Committee of the Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. He also played a prominent role in the Owensboro Country Club, both as a Board of Directors member and its former President. His alma mater saw his dedication as he became the former President of the Kentucky Wesleyan College Alumni Association, a former member of the Board of Trustees and served as a Board Member for the KWC All American/All Sports Club. Further adding to his community footprint, he participated in Leadership Owensboro, acted as the State Director and Master Developer for the International Council of Shopping Centers, and served as the former Treasurer and Executive Committee member for the Owensboro Board of Realtors. Lastly, he held the title of Realtor Emeritus with the National Association of Realtors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Lois Hall.
Those who remain to honor his memory and continue his legacy include his loving wife of 58 years, Christy Hocker Hall; his sons Todd Hall and his wife Lisa, Matt Hall and his wife Heather; brother Mike Hall; and grandchildren Collins, Callie, Bailey, Hayden, and Harrison all of Louisville, many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The celebration of life for Sonny Hall will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Dickinson officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the church. Entombment will follow at Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
