Harles Richard Payne, 73, of Owensboro, died Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital in Evansville. Born January 21, 1931, he was the son of the late Richard Harles and Viola Frances Miles Payne. He was member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and was a charter member of St. Pius X Catholic Church where he served as a liturgical minister. He was instrumental in establishing the St. Pius X Day Care Center and Kindergarten where he served on the Board for many years. He had also served as a Eucharistic Minister. He retired from Mercy Hospital where he was Plant Engineer for 19 years. He was owner of H.R. Payne Service company for 19 years and was co-owner of Kid Krossing Day Care. His interests were remodeling and renovating and he was a member of the 9 A.M. Wesleyan Park Plaza McDonalds World Problem Solving and Coffee Drinkers Club. He was preceded in death by four sisters Oralee Schultz, Mary Oneida Gilmore, Mary Oma Cronin, and Mary Imogene Payne and a granddaughter, Cameron Michelle Howard..
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy Barrett Payne; three daughters, Debbie (and her husband Greg) Hayden , Marcy (and her husband Keith) Howard both of Owensboro, and Carol Higdon of Cynthiana, KY; three sons, Stephen R.Payne , Chris (and his wife Cheryl) Payne of Owensboro and Kevin (and his wife Christina ) Payne of Jacksonville, FL. He was devoted to his six grandsons, 11 granddaughters, and 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Joyce (and her husband Stewart) Howard and Delores (and her husband Bill) Blincoe of Owensboro; an aunt Helen Miles of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 3 P.M. Friday, August 20, 2004 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with burial in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 P.M. Thursday and after 12 Noon on Friday. Prayers will be at 5 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home
