Gretchen Meyer Binegar

Gretchen Meyer Binegar, 68, of 38 Spring Island Drive, Callawassie Island, Okatie, South Carolina, formerly of Owensboro, died Friday, June 8, 2007 in Savannah, Georgia. Gretchen Meyer was born September 25, 1938, in Owensboro, to the late Adele Goebel and Karl Joseph Meyer of Livermore, KY. She was married June 6, 1964, to Dr. Garry N. Binegar at Christ the King Catholic Church in Cincinnati. Gretchen was a 1956 graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School and a 1960 graduate of Spalding University in Louisville where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. After graduating, she worked at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital and later taught nursing at Good Samaritan Hospital, also in Cincinnati. Gretchen eventually moved to Owensboro with her husband where they lived for 33 years, before retiring in 2005 to the Low Country in South Carolina.

She was an active member of St. Stephens Cathedral, where she served on the board of the Catholic Charities of Owensboro and Western Kentucky, the parish council, and was a Eucharistic minister. She was also a member of the Blessed Mother Parish School Board. She was a former member of the Owensboro Junior League, the Owensboro Garden Club, and the Daviess County Medical Society Alliance. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, and playing golf. Above all, Gretchen was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Dr. Garry N. Binegar of Callawassie Island, SC; two daughters and sons-in-law, Maria and Robert Champagne of Marietta, GA, and Heidi and Jeffrey Outland of Benton, KY; a son and daughter-in-law, Neil and Megan Elicker Binegar of Fort Wright, KY; a mother-in-law, Agnes Binegar of Owensboro; three grandchildren, Sabrina Johnston, and Margaret and Kathleen Outland; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Col. John Stephen and Linda Robertson Meyer of Bowling Green, KY, and James Eric and Judith S. Meyer of Raleigh, NC; nine nieces and nephews, and a cousin, Patricia Hewston Uhl of Cincinnati.

Funeral services will be held at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro. Her final resting place will be Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held on Callawassie Island at a later date.
