George E. Smith

George E. Smith, 70, of Kingsport, TN, formerly of Owensboro, died, Sunday, September 9, 2012, at Vanderbilt Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Davenport, Iowa to the late Fred H. and Marie Bowker Smith. He was a retired financial advisor for Northwestern Mutual Life specializing in insurance and estate planning, was a founding board member of Hospice of Western Kentucky, a member of the Charter Class of Leadership Owensboro, on the Founding Board of the Riverpark Center, on the original Bar-B-Q Festival Board, and a member of numerous other charitable and professional organizations in Owensboro. He enjoyed showing his 1931 Model A Roadster, rebuilding vintage vehicles, collecting Lionel Trains, attending Nascar races, fishing, golfing and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers.

Survivors include his wife of two years, Sharon Smith; children, Dr. Maria Smith, Teresa Sparks and her husband David all of Owensboro, and Adam Smith and his wife Dr. Lisa McKinney Smith of Bristol, VA; grandchildren, Lauren Smith, Sarah Sparks, Isabela Sparks, Anna Smith, and Ella Smith; great-granddaughter, Laila Maria Longest; the mother of his children, Betty Smith of Jonesborough, TN; brother, Marvin Smith and his wife Joan of Newburgh, IN; sister-in-laws, Barb Smith and Mary Smith both of Davenport, Iowa; dearest childhood and lifelong friend, Dr. Gary Parcel of El Cajon, CA; and a host of extended loving family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 20th at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Kentucky Organ Donor Association.
