George Allen Hicks

George Allen Hicks, Sr., of Webster Court, Owensboro, died Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at the Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born December 20, 1923 to the late Thomas Roy and Addie Wellington Hicks in Union County. He was a member of Immaculate Catholic Church, retired from Cummings Florist after 30 years and was a Navy Veteran of WW II, Petty Officer 3rd Class, served in the South Pacific in the battle Saipan in the Mariana Islands. He was a life long member of the D.A.V. and the VFW. He played basketball for West Louisville High School, was a Golden Gloves boxer in the Navy and umpired little league baseball and softball. He enjoyed NASCAR and the Louisville Cardinals.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Pearl Cummongs, Margaret Lively, Helen Mayer, Alyce Marotta and Imelda Murphy and two brothers, Ed Hicks and Tommy Hicks.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Veronica Bonnie Hicks; his sons, George A. Hicks, Jr. of Owensboro, Joseph L. Hicks and his wife, Becky of Stockton, MO, Franklin D. Hicks and his wife, Peggy of Owensboro, Thurman Lee Hicks and his wife, Monica of Carmel, IN; his daughters, Judith S. Payne and her husband, Bill of Owensboro, Georgetta F. Holder of Owensboro, Donna J. Pierson and her husband, Paul of Louisville, Rose B. Frakes and her husband, Bobby of Glenville; 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; his brother, T. R. Hicks of Owensboro and his sister, Betty Chapman of Owensboro; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday at Immaculate Catholic Church with burial in St. Alphonsus Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be 2:00 until 8:00 PM Friday with prayers at 6:30 PM at Glenn Funeral Home. Saturday friends may call after 8:30 AM at the funeral home.
