Gary Robert White, 77, of Owensboro, tragically passed away on August 31, 2025. He was born on April 9, 1948, in Springfield, Illinois, to the late Robert (Bob) and Lucile White. He loved playing basketball throughout high school and college. He said basketball was the original foundation for his team-building skills. Gary went on to graduate from Northwestern University, where he earned his Master’s degree in finance. He loved a challenge. If he wasn't constantly challenging himself with something, he wasn't happy. He had an almost obsessive passion for numbers, which he passed on to his daughter and grandson. He was passionate about mentoring others and devoted much of his life to helping numerous nonprofit organizations flourish.
Gary spent the last 18 years with Independence Bank, where his leadership, knowledge, and enthusiasm left a lasting mark on everyone he met. He never met a stranger. He served as Chief Financial Officer for 16 years before becoming Executive Vice President of Corporate Finance. His seemingly endless energy, creativity, and dedication to his colleagues, community, family, and friends made him truly admirable. Gary was proud to call his colleagues the Bank’s greatest asset. He loved watching the bank grow and ultimately thrive over the years. He took incredible pride in overseeing that progress.
Outside of work, Gary was a dedicated lifelong athlete who amazed everyone when he began competing in Ironman races at the age of 67. His determination and zest for life inspired all who knew him. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family, and those moments together were what he cherished most.
He is survived by his daughter, Allison, and his grandson, Truland, who brought him immeasurable joy, as well as his brother, Steve White, and nephew, Chris White.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held at 4:00 pm on October 19, 2025, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.
