Gary Earl Basham

Gary E. Basham, aka Papaw, age 80, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2026 wrapped in the love of his family and closest friends. He lived a life defined by dedication, quiet strength, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved most.

Professionally, Gary retired from NCR after 37 years of service. In his spare time, he was an avid hunter and was a proud member and past Worshipful Master of the Free and Accepted Mason organization in the Fordsville Masonic Lodge 600. He was dedicated and valued the brotherhood deeply.

Gary had a healthy appreciation for working with his hands and took pride in knowing that there wasn’t much you could break, that he couldn’t fix. Whether it was something mechanical or practical, he believed most things could and should be repaired---not replaced.

Papaw carried himself with a serious demeanor, yet those who knew him well were lucky enough to see his playful side. He wasn’t afraid to be silly, and his sense of humor often revealed itself in unexpected moments.

Saying more with one look than most people can with words, one steady stare from those icy-blue eyes could stop you in your tracks, command attention, or leave you wondering what was coming next—especially since his legendary poker face rarely gave anything away.

He showed his love not through grand gestures, but through consistency, dependability, and just being there—always.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Wanda, his children, Heather Bevil (Todd) and Shannon Basham (Mike Price) and his three grandchildren: Easton Ford (Kamille Rasche), Avery Owen (Jay), and John Michael Price. He is also survived by his brother, Galen Basham and sisters: Judith Bryant (Jerry) and Agatha Conway.

Funeral services will be 2 PM Monday, February 2, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2 PM until 6 PM Sunday and from Noon until the time of the service Monday at the funeral home. Masonic services will begin at 2 PM Monday followed by the funeral service.

Deeply loved and widely respected, Gary lives on in the values he instilled, the lessons he taught, and the countless memories shared with those fortunate enough to know him. His presence will always be felt in the lives he shaped and the love he gave.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky, 3419 Wathens Crossing, Owensboro, KY 42301. Messages and condolences to the family can be shared at www.glenncares.com.
