Gabe Layman, of Owensboro, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2026, under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. He was born July 16, 1940, in Daviess County, to the late James and Marian Keelin Layman. Gabe married Barbara Proctor, and she survives. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed in Germany. He lived his life for Jesus, serving as a minister for the Grayson County Detention Center and later the Daviess County Detention Center. Gabe worked in the steel industry for Green River Steel for 30 years. Gabe had a passion for fishing and gardening. His family says he had a “Green Thumb”.
Other than his parents, Gabe was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Layman, and his great-grandson, Tanner Layman.
Along with his wife Barbara, he is survived by his daughters, Becky Layman and Cathy Layman; grandchildren, Rachel Edmonds (Austin), Ashley Hafling (Logan), Andrew Layman, and Zach Layman (Sierra); great-grandchildren, Richard Edmonds, and Brayden, Aiden, Autumn, and Sophia Layman.
A Celebration of Life for Gabe will be held at 11:00 a.m. July 18 at the Pleasant Ridge Church of God, 11 Boling Rd, Utica, KY
