March 2, 1945 — March 27, 2024

Frederick Matthew Coomes, Jr.

Frederick Matthew Coomes Jr., 79, of Philpot, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, in his home. He was born March 2, 1945, in Detroit, MI, to the late Fred and Helen Shepherd Coomes Sr. Fred graduated from Owensboro Catholic High School in 1963 and attended Brescia University for two years. He was married to Sharon Bittel on February 12, 1972. He served in the Army National Guard and Army Reserves for 8 years and retired from Big Rivers Electric after 30 years. Fred was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Whitesville, KY. Throughout his life, he enjoyed hunting, watching NASCAR races, working in his shop and garden, playing cards with friends, watching his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids play sports, and having a good laugh. Though he loved going to every party and event his ever-growing family hosted, he was always ready to leave earlier than Sharon would have liked, so in that respect, his death was very much like his life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Mike Coomes; sister, Sue Rittmeyer-Coomes; and niece, Amy Jones Krakowski.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sharon; eight children, Shannon Coomes of Whitesville, Fred (Jessica) Coomes III of Sacramento, KY, Tim (Brandy) Coomes of Shelbyville, IN, Andy (Erin) Coomes of Midlothian, TX, Sarah (Craig) Geoghegan of Bardstown, KY, David (Ginny) Coomes of Owensboro, Stephanie (Michael) Morris of Princeton, KY,  and Suzanne Coomes of Philpot; seventeen grandchildren, Samantha (Brandon) McMichael, Cody Payne, Jacob Coomes, Grace Coomes, Audrey Coomes, Cameron Geoghegan, Luke Coomes, Liam Coomes, Dylan Geoghegan, McKinnley Coomes, Emma Coomes, Ruby Coomes, Freddie Coomes IV, Eli Geoghegan, Charley Coomes, Braylen Geoghegan, and Emory Geoghegan; seven great-grandchildren, Sophia McMichael, Aleah Payne, Cole Payne, Blake McMichael, Stella McMichael, Shelby McMichael, and Riley McMichael; his sister, Theresa (Frankie) Jones of Owensboro; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Visitation at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory in Owensboro will be Tuesday, April 9 from 1:00-7:00 p.m., with prayers at 6:30 p.m., and Wednesday, April 10 from 8:00-9:00 a.m. The funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 10, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, 10534 Main Cross St. in Whitesville, celebrated by Rev. Patrick Bittel. Burial will follow in St. Mary of the Woods Cemetery in Whitesville with full military honors. The grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Kentucky, 3419 Wathens Crossing, Owensboro, KY 42301 or Capital Campaign at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, 10534 Main Cross St., Whitesville, KY 42378.
