Fred E. Bowen, 88, of Crestwood Dr., Owensboro, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at his home. He was born on Feb. 24, 1921 in Powell Co., Ky. to the late Rex and Dovie Smyth Bowen. He was a member of Third Baptist Church, was a homebuilder having owned and operated Fred E. Bowen Builders, Inc. and was retired as a neon tube bender. He was a lifetime member of the Owensboro Masonic Lodge #130 from which he had received his 50 year pin and a Shriner where he volunteered to drive children many times to the Shrine Hospital in Lexington. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Post #696, the American Legion, and the AmVets. He was a past board member of the Owensboro Home Builders Association and a volunteer for the Salvation Army where he rang the bell at Christmas time raising money and won the annual "Brass Bell Trophy" four years in a row. He was also a member of the Daviess Co. Lions Club and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Norval Bowen, and three sisters, Elizabeth Hickerson, Maywood Leachman, and Hazel Moore.
Surviving is his wife of 63 years Eva Bowen, two sons, Daniel Bowen of Owensboro and Wayne Bowen of Eugene, OR, a daughter, Betsy Jerner and husband William of Lexington, three grandchildren, Ali Jerner and Amanda Jerner, both of Lexington and Joshua Bowen of New York, N.Y., a great grandchild, Gabriel Grimes of Lexington, a brother, Rex Bowen, Jr. of Sun City, AZ, three sisters, Norine Westerfield of Owensboro, Georgia Lee of N. Hollywood, CA, and Nancy Kelley of Atlanta, a sister-in-law, Louise Bowen of Owensboro, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10:00A.M. Thursday, June 4 at the Glenn Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday and after 8:30 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 215 Ewing Rd., Owensboro, Ky. 42301.
