Franklin Joseph Neubauer

Franklin Joseph Neubauer, 93, of Owensboro died Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at his home. Born October 8, 1910 to the late Albert Thomas and Katherine Adelmann Neubauer, he graduated from Owensboro High School and then Iowa State College in Ames, IA where he received a degree in Landscape Architecture. Franklin was active in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) in high school and college. During World War II, he fought in the Pacific Theatre and served in occupied Japan with the Army, earning the rank of Captain. After the war, he served in the reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Franklin lived and worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in a variety of states throughout the country. Later, he worked for the National Park Service where his training as a landscape architect was of great assistance in planning how the parks would be developed (where the roads, buildings, utilities, and plants should be located). Eventually, he was promoted to the main Park Service staff office until his retirement.

Mr. Neubaurer returned to Owensboro to live and continue his passion for landscape architecture and gardening. He has been a long-time member of Zion United Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an older brother, Fred Tyruf Neubauer and an older sister, Margaret Flaherty.

He is survived by a brother, George L. Neubauer of Denver, CO; a sister, Emma Cuttino of Owensboro; two nephews, Mike Neubauer of Denver, Co and Bill Neubauer of Colorado Springs, CO; and several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 P.M. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home Chapel with burial near his loved ones in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from Noon until 2 P.M. Friday.
