Fairy Elizabeth Kellog, 93, of 12401 Vertrees, Utica, died Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born July 5, 1913 in Berkley County, South Carolina to the late John and Cula (Jackson) Sax. She was of Port Side Baptist Church in Charleston, S.C., and her occupations included making cigars at a cigar factory where she was paid for each cigar that she made, a store clerk at a five and dime store, a store clerk in a dress shop, and a supervisor of a department store. During World War II, she kept records of costs for the U.S. Government, and she worked in Charleston Naval Base and Pensacola, Florida, as a riveter, and where her small hands allowed her to make bomb sights for fighter planes. At the Naval Yard, she also was a counselor for women there as this was the first time that women and men worked together in the same workplace.
Mrs. Kellog married Ivahn Ward in 1933, and he preceded her in death in 1982. She then married Raymond Kellog in 1988 who died in 2002. One brother Harry Sax and a sister, Marie Freeman also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sons, John T. Ward, and wife Sylvia of Rock Hill, S.C., Ivahn Ward of Walla Walla Washington, a daughter, Fay Klessig of Utica, and grandchildren, Deborah Aldridge of Lawrenceburg, Ky., Marietta Coakley of Utica, Helmuth Klessig of Owensboro, Kevin Ward of Japan, and Kirsten Ward of Charlotte, N.C., a brother Stephen Sax of Canton, Ohio, and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Sunday, January 28, 2007 at 3:30 p.m. at Carolina Memorial Gardens in Charleston. Visitation will be at J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home, Northwoods Chapel in Charleston from 2 t o3 p.m. Sunday. There will be no local visitation. Glenn Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Heart Association, the Alzheimers Association, or Port Side Baptist Church Building Fund.
