Evelyn Hope Schell, 93, of Owensboro passed away Thursday, February 25, 2016 at The Carmel Home. Born in Monroe County, KY, the daughter of the late Arlie Ray and Nancy Bera Kerr Hope, she was raised in Glasgow, KY and graduated from Glasgow High School. She received a bachelor's degree in Home Economics from Western Kentucky University and had worked as a librarian at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine library. Mrs. Schell was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church and had been active with the Daviess County Medical Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Merrill W. Schell in 1989 and a son Merrill S. Schell in 2015.
Mrs. Schell is survived by her children, Dr. Robert Schell (Janice) of Owensboro, Dr. David Schell (Kathy) of Paducah, and Nancy Schell Pollock (David) of Toledo; her daughter-in-law Lynn Schell of Louisville; her grandchildren, Dianne Milton, Leigh Schell, Matthew Schell, Stephen Schell, Monty Schell, Lauren Budziak, Ben Schell, Jon Pollock, and Will Schell; and her 8 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by Libby Girten who was with her for many years and her other caregivers Lavada Crabtree, Debbie Mayfield, Kelly Husk, Garry Hamburg, Taylor Husk, Rebekah Cook, and the wonderful folks of the Carmel Home.
She was an only child with an independent and strong willed spirit, modeled after her mother Bera. Family and home were the focus of her life; taking pride in being a homemaker. (She had "a degree in home economics".) It was her way of being there and loving all of us quietly with a strength that remains in our memory of her life.
Services for Mrs. Schell, officiated by Rev. Darren Brandon, will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, where visitation will be from 5:30 until 7:30 Monday and after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday. Entombment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Merrill W Schell, M.D. and Evelyn Hope Schell Scholarship Fund at Western Kentucky University, the memorial fund of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, or the Carmel Home. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home and the addresses online.
