Eva Mae Birkhead, 81, of Owensboro, passed away Friday, March 4, 2016 at her home. She was born in Greenville, Kentucky to the late Ellis and Alice Munday. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, good friend, nurse and Catholic who lived by "faith, hope and love." Mrs. Birkhead graduated with an RN degree from Murray State University and married George I. Birkhead. She worked as a nurse at the hospital, Hermitage Manor and Dr. Lacy's office. She later taught nursing at Owensboro Business College and partnered with her husband in building their business. She was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral and previously a longtime member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church.
Her career as a nurse perfectly complimented who she was as a woman, a courageous, selfless servant and living example of unconditional love.
Mrs. Birkhead was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, George I. Birkhead in 2001.
She is survived by daughters, Josanna LaMastus and her husband, Byron of Owensboro and Jennifer B. Clark and her husband, Mike of Owensboro/Denver, CO; sons, James Birkhead and Joe Birkhead and his wife, Dianne, both of Owensboro; grandchildren, Meaghan C. Rajkumar and her husband, Raj of Boston, Justin Clark and his wife, Ira of Owensboro, Natalie Clark of Denver, Jordan, Jarred, Amberli and Ashley Birkhead, Ellis and Andy Birkhead, all of Owensboro; great-grandchildren, Maddy Rajkumar and Don Clark; sisters, Letha Cecil and Jessie Jackson, both of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews, including Theresa Wilson who cared for her during the past year. No words can describe our respect and love for such a wonderful person. We have been blessed to be part of her life. Her grace and strength have touched many and live on.
The funeral mass will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 8 at St. Stephen Cathedral with entombment at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 3 until 8 PM , with prayers at 6 PM , and Tuesday after 12 Noon at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
