Eugene E. Sheaffer, 97, of Owensboro passed away Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Mr. Sheaffer was born November 18, 1919 in Junction City, Kansas to the late George and Carrie Clark Sheaffer. Gene was a Army veteran of WWII who fought at the Angio Beachhead, Italy. He was a devoted Christian and member of Dawson Baptist and Walnut Memorial Baptist Churches where he loved teaching Sunday School class. If you talked with Gene long enough, he would eventually tell you a joke or two or three. He enjoyed both watching and coaching baseball and playing Scrabble. Gene was a life-long learner who loved to read and research things. In his later days, he was even teaching the nurses who cared for him how to speak German.
Mr. Sheaffer was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Virgie Sheaffer; ten of his siblings; a grandchild, Shawna Galloway.
Those left to cherish her memory include his three daughters, Jennette Manno and husband Peter of Little Rock, Arkansas, Linda Anderson and husband James of Owensboro, Debra Myatt and husband Roger of Owensboro; grandchildren, Stephanie Manno, Tim Galloway, and Renona Clark (Charlie); sister, Wanetta Baltzer of Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.
The service will be 10:00 AM on Thursday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Brother Craig Bratcher officiating. Burial will be in the field of honor at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3:00 to 7:00 PM and Thursday after 9:00 AM at the funeral home.
