Eugene R. Englert

January 15, 1925 — August 18, 2001

Eugene Raphael Englert, age 76, of Jacksonville, Florida, died Sunday, August 18 after a valiant struggle with cancer. Gene was born in Owensboro, Kentucky to Hilary and Caroline Englert. He attended St. Bernard College in Alabama and graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was commissioned by the United States Navy in 1945, and later served as Battalion CO of Seabee reservists in three states, overseeing the completion of a national Boy Scout camp in Colorado. He retired a Captain, USNR. Gene was employed by L&N/CSX railroad for 37 years, and held the post of Assistant VP, Purchasing; and Chief Engineer, Maintenance of Way, retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. Pauls Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, and St. Vincent dePaul. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Richard Joe Baby, and a brother, Hilary Joseph.

Mr. Englert is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Sally Flaherty Englert; his children: Kathy Lee (Harrison) of Portland, OR; Eugene R. Jr. of Corbin, KY; Mark of Jacksonville, FL; Richard (Judy) of Louisville, KY; Christopher (Mary Anne) of Houston, MS; and Sally Suppiger (Gary) of Cocolalla, ID; 18 grandchildren; three sisters, Lil Wilson, Betty Tichenor, and Martha Thompson, all of Owensboro, KY; four brothers, Joe, of Pensacola, FL; Bob and Tom of Owensboro, KY; and Jack, of Amelia Island, FL, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and treasured friends.

Gene will be remembered for his love of life, courage, selflessness and his ability to spread joy to those around him. A funeral mass in celebration of his life and resurrection will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday August 25, 2001 at St. Pauls Catholic Church, 2609 Park Street, Jacksonville. The celebrants will be the Reverend Thomas Sullivan, Pastor, and Reverend James Corry, Associate Pastor. There will be a graveside service 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 28, 2001 at Resurrection Cemetery, Owensboro, KY, with full military honors. A memorial mass will follow at STS Joseph and Paul Catholic Church in Owensboro at 12 Noon officiated by Father Tony Bickett.
