Ellwood Robert "Bob" Stultz, 86, of Owensboro passed away Friday, June 13, 2008 at Wellington Parc after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born November 15, 1921 in Louisville, Mr. Stultz was the son of the late John W. and Lydia Huxley Stultz. He attended Male High School and the University of Louisville where he played center for the U of L basketball team. Throughout his life he remained an avid fan of his alma mater and a sports enthusiast, excelling in his favorite pastime, golf. He also enjoyed tennis, running, and participated in several marathons. Among his many other pursuits, Mr. Stultz was a talented woodworker, who designed and crafted fine cherry furniture. During World War II, he was a pilot who proudly served his country as a lieutenant in the Navy; and during this period he married Harriette Pope McIlvaine of Louisville on April 3, 1943, and to whom he remained a devoted husband for 58 years. Mr. Stultz' lifelong career was in sales and included years as a regional manager with Ford Motor Company and management positions in the field of business systems. Upon his retirement from Boise Cascade in Detroit, MI, where he was twice named "Salesman of the Year", he returned to Kentucky to enjoy his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Birmingham, MI.
He was preceded in death by his wife Harriette on September 24, 2001 and his firstborn son, Ellwood Robert Stultz, Jr., D.M.D. of Mill Valley, CA on June 23, 2006.
He is survived by daughters, Sue Ellen Stultz and Ann Stultz (and Peter) Demko of Owensboro; a son, Michael McIlvaine Stultz (and Paul Marquis) of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Peter W. Demko II (and Beth) of Lexington, KY, David Bradley Demko of Norman, OK, and Katherine Ann Demko of Owensboro; and great-grandchildren, Peter William (Liam) Demko, Alistair Grey Demko, and Violet Claire Demko all of Lexington.
Mr. Stultz will be remembered for his strength of character, fine intellect and devotion to his family and friends. In accordance with his wishes and his passionate support of education and research, be bequeathed his remains to the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, a nationally recognized program for the study of Alzheimer's disease at the University of Kentucky. A private memorial service will be held by the immediate family members to celebrate his life.
