Ellis Ruperd Belcher, 87, of Owensboro passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Wellington Parc. Born March 17, 1924 in Lee County, he was the son of the late Herman and Mae Kirkpatrick Belcher; was of the Methodist faith; and was retired from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 633. An Army veteran of World War II, he fought in 7 major battles including Normandy and the Battle of Bastone, Belgium and was recipient of the Purple Heart, four Bronze Stars, two theater ribbons, the Good Conduct Medal, and WWII Victory Medal. He was a life member of VFW Post 696, AmVets Post 119, American Legion Post 9, and DAV Chapter 4. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Johannah Stewart Belcher on July 8, 2010, and brothers, Hager Belcher, L.B. Belcher, K.Z. Belcher, and Alvin (Tooter) Belcher.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Jim Sharp of Owensboro; grandchildren, Summer Sharp Ogle and Brad Sharp of Owensboro; great-grandchildren, Hillary Sharp, Peyton Sharp, Brody Ogle, Ryan Ogle, and Lettie Ogle; a sister, Charlene Whitt Eirwin and husband Jack of Philpot; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011 in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Reverend John Cummins officiating. Burial will be in Bells Run Cemetery with military honors provided by the Ft Campbell Honor Guard and VFW Post 696. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. on Friday and after noon on Saturday at the funeral home.
